Children under 4 years of age were recruited from the community and followed for 16 weeks. Parents recorded daily symptom diaries and collected weekly nasal swabs, regardless of symptoms. Swabs were analyzed by PCR for a broad panel of common respiratory viruses. Its primary objective is to examine interactions between respiratory virus infections in young children. The study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMCU) and registered in the Clinical Trials Register (NL78424.041.21).
